Manager, Accounting Policy

AXA XL invites applications for the position of Manager, Accounting Policy. The successful candidate primarily will assist with technical accounting consultations and research for purposes of interpreting existing policy or developing/implementing new policy. Such policy outcomes have far-reaching implications for the Company’s accounting and financial reporting under various global accounting bases. The successful candidate must have the ability to conduct technical research, think critically about the application of accounting literature to complex transactions, construct appropriate positions that withstand the scrutiny of peers and external auditors and communicate them to appropriate parties.

What will your essential responsibilities include?

  • Conduct research to support the development and resolution of technical accounting consultations on topics under IFRS and US GAAP, as well as other comprehensive bases of accounting as required.
  • Prepare extensive written memoranda supporting positions taken and detailing conclusions reached through research and consultative efforts, to be presented to internal stakeholders and external auditors.
  • Serve as an informal accounting consultative resource for the Finance organization.
  • Maintain AXA XL Divisional Accounting Policy Manual and monitor developments at AXA Group for applicability at the divisional level.
  • Monitor developments at key accounting standard setting bodies (principally the IASB and FASB) and proactively identify emerging matters with the potential to impact the Company.
  • Perform relevant COSO internal control requirements within the Accounting Policy function, including those related to policy consultations and standard-setting, as well as processes associated with other centralized technical accounting areas monitored in the Controllership.
  • Support the implementation of new accounting standards, working within Finance and across the broader Company as required, including significant upcoming implementations of IFRS 17 Insurance Contracts and IFRS 9 Financial Instruments.
  • Assist the Controllership with other ad hoc projects as required.
  • This position can be based in Stamford or other major U.S. City.

You will report to the Head of Group Accounting Policy who is based in Stamford, CT.

SHARE your talent

  • We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of reinsurance/insurance industry accounting and/or financial reporting experience, or 5-7 years of general accounting experience, with a focus on accounting policy and/or accounting research.
  • CA/CPA or other accounting designation required, with Big Four public accounting experience a plus.
  • Highest-caliber written communication skills and experience in developing accounting position papers required.
  • Ability to navigate a complex global organization, understand constituencies served, and develop/leverage relationships necessary to bring matters to resolution.
  • Strong active listening, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, a high degree of accountability to self and the team, and a proven ability to work independently.
