Scientific Software Engineer

Job goal
Support the system architects and the software team in developing and integrating proof-of concepts and new research.

Job responsibilities and qualifications
You will work at the “interface” between the software engineers and the R&D department. We constantly develop new applications and features for our electron microscopes, and many of those require state-of-the-art mathematical modeling and/or data processing techniques. We are looking for a person who can help us “productize” new ideas faster. We have highly skilled scientists/engineers (mainly in the fields of physics and electronics), and a professional team of software developers. We sometimes “outsource” work to a mathematical engineering agency, but we want to increase our in-house knowledge in this area. We are looking for someone who has a good understanding of the mathematics involved, and knows enough about software to help the software team integrate the solution in a customer-ready product.

There is varying growth potential: towards identifying new applications yourself, and bringing these to a proof-of-concept status (including identifying customer needs), and/or towards becoming an expert/architect on specialized fields relating to image/data processing.

Requirements

  • Successfully completed a technical study in mathematics, electronics, mechatronics, physics or mechanical engineering on a HBO/master (WO) level. Recent Graduate or some years of experience at an engineering firm.
  • Has affinity with software.
  • Is experienced in and loves to work with algorithms.
  • Has in-depth knowledge of measurement automation, signal and image processing, numeric optimization techniques.
  • Is capable to build prototypes/proof of concept
  • Is capable of experiencing and trying things.
  • Has willingness to dive into a wide variation of subjects related to image and signal processing.
  • Knows how to find relevant literature.
  • Likes to have real influence and added value on the product.
  • Has a natural drive to do his/her work better every day and aims to exceed expectations.
  • Has a natural drive to take responsibility/ownership to get the work done, stays focused and is pro-active.
  • Loves when there is lots of freedom to mold the job him/herself and is self-steering. We are not going to tell you in detail what you must do.
  • Likes to work together with his/her colleagues and having some good laughs with them.
  • Cooperation and co-creation are key to our success.
  • Has good knowledge of English, verbal and written.
  • Has strong communication skills, is down to earth and straightforward.
  • Has a non-conformist attitude and is analytical strong and exploratory.
  • Is always up-to-date with the latest developments in techniques.
