Senior Toxicology Advisor 

Position Summary

The Senior Toxicology Advisor will contribute to the company’s health and environmental risk assessment activities to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations world-wide. The position requires an experienced toxicologist with a strong scientific background in either human health or environmental toxicology and fate. In depth knowledge of chemistry, toxicokinetics and in-vitro test methods or environmental risk assessment is required. A solid understanding of Chemical and Biocides Regulations in the European Union is a condition. Knowledge of other Chemical Regulations, such as US, Canada and Asia is an asset. The incumbent must be able to work in an interdisciplinary environment in collaboration with professionals with expertise in advocacy, government relations, legal, regulatory, and business. The individual should possess strong verbal and written communication skills, and be able to discuss complex scientific and regulatory issues with scientists and non-scientists. In addition, the ability to interact with outside scientists and government officials in a manner that best represents the values and policies of Albemarle Corporation is a necessity.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Ensure compliance of Albemarle products with hazard and risk assessment requirements of chemicals regulations world-wide
  • Provide testing strategies and toxicological assessments
  • Maintain toxicological and ecotoxicological information of Albemarle’s chemicals
  • Perform risk assessments as required by different legislations (e.g. Biocides, EU-REACH)
  • Disseminate toxicology information on Albemarle’s chemicals
  • Engage in a proactive and collaborative relationship with regulatory agencies, scientists, industry groups and customers
  • Cooperate with our Advocacy and Hazard Communication team in preparing scientifically robust communication on the hazard and risk of our products
     

Main Responsibilities

  • Support regulatory issues on chemical registrations in the EU (e.g. substance evaluations under REACH)
  • Support business on regulatory issues on biocides in the EU
  • Contribute to inter-industry working groups and publications on new aspects of toxicology and risk assessment of chemicals
  • Update and maintain regulatory submission dossiers (e.g. REACH registration dossiers)
  • Work with the other members of the Global Product Stewardship group to develop testing plans and testing strategies for our chemicals, monitor studies, compose summaries and interpret results
  • Cooperate with business units to identify needs for toxicological and ecotoxicological testing for regulatory purposes and registrations worldwide and communicate the outcome and impacts
  • Be involved in the hazard communication and in particular in the creation of safety data sheet, hazard classification and other hazard information for our customers
  • Contribute to Albemarle's product stewardship activities


Required Qualifications, Experience and Competencies - 

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in toxicology and/or ecotoxicology plus extensive experience
  • Board certification in either US or Europe in general toxicology such as DABT or ERT or SETAC
  • Strong science background


Experience 

  • A minimum of 10 years working in industry, academia, contract research Institute or a government agency
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in regulatory toxicology of Chemicals covering European requirements, a knowledge of US and Asian regulatory requirements is an asset.
  • Experienced in hazard assessment, risk assessment and exposure assessment principles
  • Track record of working in an interdisciplinary environment interacting with business, advocacy, legal, R&D and manufacturing groups
  • Ability to identify collaborative partners (contract houses, universities, consultants) whenever specific expertise is required
  • Track record of scientific credibility in cooperation with scientists, regulatory authorities, industry groups and interdisciplinary platforms
     

Competencies

  • Interpretation of complex scientific studies
  • Communication of study interpretation to regulatory agencies, scientists and non-scientists
  • Identifying upcoming challenges to existing or planned products
  • Scientific database searching
  • Working knowledge of software systems used for toxicology: EPISUITE, IUCLID, ECETOC TRA, etc.
  • Excellent knowledge of EU-REACH and the EU Biocidal Products Regulations
  • Ability to rapidly integrate information and make informed decisions
  • Ability to work in a multicultural and international environment
  • Ability to operate autonomously, with a strong sense for initiative
  • Language skills: fluent in English and at least one European language
